Recordz vs Vinyl Record App
Vinyl Record App, listed on the App Store as "Vinyl Record App: Track Your Record Collection" and called simply Vinyl by its developer, is a collection manager. It keeps a tidy list of what you own and what you're hunting. Recordz is a discovery app: a feed of records you haven't heard yet. They overlap less than the names suggest. This comparison is based on public App Store listings and the developers' websites. We make Recordz, so weigh this accordingly.
So, Vinyl Record App or Recordz?
The case for Vinyl Record App
If you want a clean, simple catalog of your shelves, Vinyl Record App is a strong pick. You search for a record by artist, title or catalog number and add it to your collection or wantlist. Tags let you organize by genre, shelf or mood, a shuffle button picks something to play, and a home-screen widget suggests a random record. iCloud keeps your collection in step across your devices. Premium adds Discogs sync, barcode scanning and an AI cover scanner. It has been on the App Store since 2016 and has more than 3,500 ratings averaging 4.8. Recordz doesn't try to do this job as well.
The case for Recordz
Recordz is for the records that aren't on your shelf yet. You swipe through a feed of real releases from the Discogs catalog, shaped by the genres, styles and eras you pick, and hear a preview where one exists before you save. Connect Discogs and your saves land in your Discogs wantlist, because Recordz syncs both ways. It adds a directory of 275 independent record stores and curated lists, such as Detroit techno, for when you want somewhere to start.
The short version: Vinyl Record App for keeping track of what you own, Recordz for finding what you don't. They work well side by side.

Where Vinyl Record App shines
It's built for the collection itself
Vinyl Record App is about the records you already have: what's on the shelf, how it's tagged, and what to play tonight. The shuffle button and random-record widget turn the collection into something you use every day, not just a list. Recordz has no tags, shuffle or widget.
A decade of history and loyal users
It launched in 2016 and has more than 3,500 ratings averaging 4.8 on the US App Store. Its developer's site says it has 100,000 collectors. Recordz launched in 2026 and is much earlier on that road.
Scanning that works on covers
Premium users can scan barcodes or point the camera at a cover and let the AI scanner identify the record, which helps with older pressings that have no barcode. Recordz scans barcodes too, and on iPhone and iPad it reads the catalog number and title printed on a cover or label to match records without one, but it has no image-recognition mode like Vinyl Record App's AI scanner.
Your data, your devices
The collection lives in iCloud and syncs across your devices, and you can export a spreadsheet of your records. The App Store privacy label says the developer collects no data from the app. Recordz doesn't offer a spreadsheet export.
Where Recordz is different
A feed of records you haven't met
Vinyl Record App helps you discover through your friends' latest adds. Recordz is built around discovery: a personal For You feed from the genres, styles and eras you choose, plus Most Wanted and New Additions, one real release at a time. Each card shows the year, label and marketplace price and links to the Discogs listing.
Hear it before you save it
Each record comes with a preview where one exists — release videos, and for record-store stock, the store's own audio. Swipe past what doesn't land and save what does.
Discogs stays the source of truth
Connect Discogs and Recordz imports your collection and wantlist. Save a record in Recordz and it's added to your Discogs wantlist; remove it and Discogs updates too. If you catalog in Discogs, nothing has to be entered twice.
Somewhere to go and buy it
Recordz maps 275 independent record stores across 16 cities, from New York to Tokyo, and publishes 14 lists ranked using Discogs want and have data.
Compare the plan, not just the price
Vinyl Record App pricing
Free to download, with core cataloging features included. Vinyl Premium unlocks Discogs sync, barcode and AI cover scanning, and extra record fields such as notes, ratings and condition. The US App Store description quotes $5.99 a month; the listing's in-app purchases also show Premium at $1.99 and $3.99, so check the price shown in the app.
Recordz pricing
Free to download, with 10 free saves; inviting friends earns more. Recordz Pro costs $2.99 a month or $19.99 a year. It removes the save limit and adds playlist sharing, new-release alerts for artists and labels you follow, and a public profile with a Pro badge. The Discover tab and Chromecast are free. A Discogs account is free and optional; you only need one for sync.
Recordz vs Vinyl Record App FAQ
Is Recordz a collection manager like Vinyl Record App?
Not really. Recordz shows your Discogs collection and wantlist and keeps them in sync, but it has no tags, shuffle or spreadsheet export. For cataloging, Vinyl Record App or Discogs itself is the better tool.
Does Vinyl Record App work with Discogs?
Yes. Discogs sync is a Premium feature; the developer says it keeps your collection and wantlist aligned with your Discogs account. Recordz's Discogs sync is free and runs both ways.
Can I use both?
Yes. A common split is Vinyl Record App to catalog the shelves and Recordz to find the next record. If both are connected to the same Discogs account, records you save in Recordz land in your Discogs wantlist.
Which app is better for discovering new music?
Recordz, because that's what it's built for. Vinyl Record App's discovery comes from following friends and seeing what they add.
Is either app on Android?
Recordz is on Google Play for Android. Vinyl Record App's developer lists iPhone and iPad only.
Which one is free?
Both are free to download. Vinyl Record App keeps scanning and Discogs sync behind Premium; Recordz includes both on its free plan, gives you 10 free saves, and offers Pro for unlimited saves and extra features.
