Recordz vs VinylBox
VinylBox and Recordz both connect to your Discogs account, which is why they get compared. They do different jobs. VinylBox is a full Discogs collection manager: scan, organize, value and sell what you own. Recordz is a discovery feed for records you don't own yet. This comparison is based on public App Store listings and published user reviews. We make Recordz, so weigh this accordingly.
So, VinylBox or Recordz?
The case for VinylBox
If your collection lives on Discogs and you want a better way to manage it on your phone, VinylBox is one of the most complete options. It scans barcodes and, since September 2026, album covers. It organizes records into folders, tags and Smart Folders, records media and sleeve condition, shows collection value and a Rarity Score, and lets you list copies on the Discogs Marketplace and manage those listings without leaving the app. It has been around since 2017 and has more than 2,800 US ratings averaging 4.7. Recordz doesn't compete with any of that.
The case for Recordz
Recordz starts from the other end: records you haven't found yet. You swipe through a feed of real Discogs releases, personalized by the genres, styles and eras you choose, and hear a preview where one exists. Save one and it's added to your Discogs wantlist, because Recordz syncs both ways. It also maps 275 independent record stores and publishes 14 curated lists.
The short version: VinylBox to manage and sell the collection, Recordz to grow it. Because both work on the same Discogs account, they fit together without double entry.

Where VinylBox shines
It runs your whole collection
VinylBox does the work collectors do every week: adding records, fixing the pressing, noting condition and where you bought it, and filing it in the right folder. Recent updates added matrix and runout details while scanning, alternate matches and a way to see which variants you already own. Recordz doesn't try to do any of this.
Selling without opening a laptop
You can list a copy on the Discogs Marketplace, get a price suggestion and manage your listings from your phone. Recordz has no selling tools at all.
More than vinyl
VinylBox handles CDs, cassettes and other formats in the Discogs database. Recordz is built around vinyl.
Years of steady updates
It launched in 2017, and its release notes show updates every few weeks through 2026. More than 2,800 ratings average 4.7. One reviewer called it "much easier to use than the native Discogs app"; another, cataloging a collection of more than 1,000 records, said the developer "is quick to respond." Recordz launched in 2026.
Where Recordz is different
Discovery is the main screen
VinylBox's search finds what you already have in mind. Recordz shows you what you don't: a For You feed shaped by your genres, styles and eras, plus Most Wanted and New Additions. Each card shows the year, label and marketplace price and links to the Discogs listing.
Preview first
Each record comes with a preview where one exists, from release videos, and for record-store stock, the store's own audio. The loop is quick: hear it, swipe past or save.
Android and web browsing
Recordz is on Android as well as iPhone and iPad, and you can browse records, artists, labels, lists and stores on recordz.app. VinylBox's App Store listing covers iPhone and iPad, and its developer doesn't list an Android version.
Shops and lists
Recordz includes a directory of 275 independent record stores in 16 cities, from Berlin to São Paulo, and 14 lists ranked using Discogs want and have data, such as spiritual jazz.
Compare the plan, not just the price
VinylBox pricing
Free to download, with an auto-renewing VinylBox Pro subscription. The App Store description quotes Pro at $0.99 to $1.99 a month, while the US listing's in-app purchases show weekly, monthly and yearly options from $1.99 to $19.99. Which features need Pro isn't spelled out on the listing, so check the offer in the app.
Recordz pricing
Free to download, with 10 free saves; inviting friends earns more. Recordz Pro costs $2.99 a month or $19.99 a year. It removes the save limit and adds playlist sharing, new-release alerts for artists and labels you follow, and a public profile with a Pro badge. The Discover tab and Chromecast are free. A Discogs account is free and optional; you only need one for sync.
Recordz vs VinylBox FAQ
Does Recordz replace VinylBox?
No. VinylBox manages, values and sells a Discogs collection; Recordz doesn't sell and has no folders, tags or condition notes. Recordz adds a discovery feed with previews.
Can I use VinylBox and Recordz together?
Yes. Both connect to Discogs, so a record you save in Recordz appears in your Discogs wantlist, which VinylBox reads from the same account.
Do I need a Discogs account?
For VinylBox, yes, since it connects to your Discogs account and lets you sign up in the app. Recordz works without one; connect a free Discogs account only if you want sync.
Can I sell records in Recordz?
No. Recordz links to Discogs listings and record stores but has no selling tools. VinylBox lets you list and manage Discogs Marketplace listings.
Is VinylBox on Android?
Its developer lists iPhone and iPad only. An unrelated Android app called "Vinyl box" is made by a different developer. Recordz is on Google Play.
Which is cheaper?
Both are free to download. VinylBox Pro is a subscription with several price points listed. Recordz Pro is $2.99 a month or $19.99 a year.
