50 Essential Detroit Techno Records
Detroit techno means Detroit artists making techno — not the city's parallel house scene, and not techno made elsewhere. This list is hand-curated from the lineage itself: the Belleville Three (Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson) and their aliases, the Underground Resistance / Jeff Mills / Robert Hood axis, and the second and third generations — Octave One, Carl Craig, Stacey Pullen, Delano Smith, Norm Talley, DJ Bone and others — who carried the sound forward. Ranked by who defined the genre first, capped at two records per artist (three for the deepest catalogues) so no single act crowds out the rest of the story.
