What are the best alternatives to MD Vinyl?

If you want another turntable-style player, the closest alternatives are Vinyl Widget for a simple Apple Music widget, VinylPod for Apple Music and Spotify widgets on iPhone, iPad and Mac, and Vinyls - Record Player for a tactile Apple Music player across Apple devices. None has MD Vinyl's track record, though: its 28,679 US ratings average 4.6, and it works with both Apple Music and Spotify, on iPhone, iPad and Android. If you're happy with it, there's little reason to switch. If you searched for MD Vinyl hoping to track or find real records, you want a different kind of app: Discogs or a collection app for records you own, and a discovery app such as Recordz for records you don't.

How we compared

This guide is based on public App Store and Google Play listings, developers' websites and published reviews, checked on September 30, 2026. Ratings are US App Store figures from that date. We make Recordz, so weigh this accordingly.

MD Vinyl and its alternatives compared

MD Vinyl: still the benchmark

Best for: most people who want streaming to look and feel like a record.

MD Vinyl shows Apple Music or Spotify playback as a turntable, with the album art on the label, a draggable needle and home-screen widgets. Its in-app purchases are Pro at $14.99 and Premium options at $1.99 and $2.99. Its developer, MD Studio, also makes MD Widgets, a separate app for live wallpapers and widgets. See Recordz vs MD Vinyl.

Vinyl Widget: best simple widget

Best for: a vinyl widget on your home screen with no setup.

Vinyl Widget, from KYOTO K.K., plays your Apple Music on a spinning record widget, with a full-screen record view inside the app. It has no accounts or settings to configure. The free version limits how many songs the widget plays; unlimited costs $2.99 lifetime, or $0.99 a week or $4.99 a year. Its 2,416 ratings average 4.7.

VinylPod: best for Spotify and Mac

Best for: Spotify listeners, and anyone who wants the widget on a Mac.

VinylPod makes now-playing widgets for Apple Music and Spotify. It runs natively on Mac as well as iPhone and iPad, and has a Google Play listing. Premium costs $3.99. Its listing is brief, so check the screenshots for the widget styles before you buy.

Vinyls - Record Player: best across Apple devices

Best for: Apple Music subscribers who want a player on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV.

Vinyls, from Pixelfolio, turns your Apple Music library into records you can scratch with your finger, with haptic feedback on the needle drop and dust that gathers on albums you haven't played. It has widgets and AirPlay, and is Apple Music only. Platinum costs $1.99 a month, $9.99 a year or $19.99 lifetime. Its average rating, 3.8 from 118 ratings, is lower than the others here.

Vynilizer, Muwi and Music Player: newer and older options

Best for: trying a different look.

Vynilizer, released in July 2026, gives your Apple Music library a record-inspired interface with tonearms, sleeves and color themes. It requires iOS 26.2 and an Apple Music subscription, and had no ratings on September 30. Muwi and Music Player - Music Widget are Apple Music widget players with several vinyl themes, but neither has been updated since 2022 and 2023 respectively.

Vinyl Solutions: a player that knows your collection

Best for: people who want a record-player interface and also own records.

Vinyl Solutions is a vintage-style record player with a curated store and a search of millions of records. Its subscription unlocks playing full records through Apple Music, importing your Discogs collection, photographing your shelves, and pressing and pricing information. It's on iPhone and Android. Plans run from $7.99 a week to $59.99 lifetime, and its 39 ratings average 3.7.

If you want an app for physical records

Best for: people who searched "MD Vinyl" but own records, or want to start.

MD Vinyl and the apps above don't catalog records, scan barcodes or show what a record is worth. For that, start with the free Discogs app, the reference database and marketplace, or a collection app such as VinylBox, Discographic, Spinstack or Groovv. See the best vinyl apps and vinyl widgets vs collection apps.

To find records you don't own yet, Recordz is a swipeable feed of real releases from the Discogs catalog, with a preview on each record where one exists, two-way Discogs sync and a directory of 275 record stores in 16 cities. It plays previews only, so it won't replace MD Vinyl for listening to whole albums. Plenty of people use both.

MD Vinyl alternatives FAQ

Is there an MD Vinyl app for Android?

Yes. MD Vinyl has a Google Play listing as MD Vinyl - Music Player Widget. VinylPod and Vinyl Solutions are on Google Play too.

Which MD Vinyl alternative works with Spotify?

VinylPod supports Apple Music and Spotify, as does MD Vinyl itself. Vinyls and Vynilizer say they're Apple Music only, and the listings for Vinyl Widget, Muwi and Music Player - Music Widget mention only Apple Music.

Which one is free?

All of them are free to download. Music Player - Music Widget lists no in-app purchases; the others sell lifetime unlocks or subscriptions for extra features. You'll also need an Apple Music or Spotify subscription for playback.

Do these apps play my actual vinyl records?

No. They play music from a streaming service and display it as a record. To catalog records you own, use Discogs or a collection app.

Does Recordz work like MD Vinyl?

No. Recordz is for discovering and collecting physical records, with previews rather than full tracks, and it has no widgets. It's a complement to MD Vinyl, not a replacement.
