Paulo Monteiro (b. 10 December 1963, Lisbon) is a Portuguese guitarist whose work bridges two key projects of the country’s 1980s alternative and post‑punk scene: Croix Sainte and Pop Dell'Arte.

Paulo was a founding member and guitarist of Croix Sainte, formed in the early 1980s with André Louro de Almeida (vocals), João Robert (bass), and Luís San Payo (drums). The band became a distinctive presence in Lisbon’s emerging post‑punk movement, known for its experimental edge, atmospheric guitar work, and a sound that helped define the city’s underground musical identity during that decade.

In 1994, Paulo Monteiro joined Pop Dell'Arte, one of Portugal’s most influential avant‑garde bands. Created in 1985 by João Peste, Pop Dell’Arte quickly gained critical acclaim after placing 2nd at the Rock Rendez‑Vous Music Contest and winning the Originality Prize, attracting a loyal following. Their work blends post‑punk, art‑rock, noise, and phonetic Dada/futurist poetry, with references to Warhol, Duchamp, Picabia, and cinematic influences from Fassbinder, Antonioni, and Fellini. The band’s ethos, expressed in the iconic track Illogik Plastik, is “Il faut aimer les contradictions”.

Paulo’s long‑term role in Pop Dell'Arte includes studio recordings and numerous historic concerts in Lisbon, Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra, Évora, Leiria, Viseu, Braga, and abroad (Barcelona, London, Vigo).

His trajectory illustrates the interconnected fabric of Lisbon’s alternative music community, linking two seminal bands whose influence shaped the evolution of Portuguese experimental rock from the 1980s onward.
