50 Essential House Records
House is Chicago's music first — Jesse Saunders' 'On And On', Frankie Knuckles and Jamie Principle at the Warehouse, the Trax and DJ International singles that turned a DJ's edit style into a genre — and then it became everyone's: the jack tracks and acid of Chicago's second wave, the garage-soul of New York and New Jersey's Strictly Rhythm and Nervous scenes, and the French-touch and UK anthems that carried it around the world. This list is hand-curated across that whole arc: the founding Chicago singles, the Masters At Work/Todd Terry/Strictly Rhythm axis that defined New York house, and the European records — Daft Punk, Stardust, Cassius — that took the sound back out to the world. Deep house's own lineage (Larry Heard's deeper catalogue, Ron Trent, Kerri Chandler, Moodymann, Theo Parrish and the rest) lives on Recordz's companion Deep House list; this one is the anthems, the jack tracks, and the records that filled the floor.
