50 Essential Electro Records
Electro means drum machines, vocoders and the Kraftwerk/Bambaataa lineage — not the parallel Detroit techno story, and not the UK bleep and IDM records that grew out of Warp's early catalogue. This list is hand-curated from the lineage itself: the 1982-86 Tommy Boy/Streetwave old-school (Bambaataa, Hashim, Newcleus, Mantronix), the Miami and Detroit bass-electro that followed (Egyptian Lover, MC ADE, Aux 88, Drexciya), and the Dutch and German revival that kept the sound alive from the late '90s on (I-f, Anthony Rother, Dopplereffekt). Ranked by who defined the genre first, capped at two records per artist or alias family so no single act crowds out the rest of the story.
