How do you sell records on Discogs?

To sell on Discogs, create a free account, complete your seller settings with a verified PayPal account and shipping policies, then find the exact release page that matches your copy and select "Sell a copy". Grade the record and sleeve, set a price using recent sales history, and list it. When it sells, Discogs deducts its fee from the payment and you ship.

Set up your seller account

Before you can list, Discogs requires three things in your seller settings:

  • A verified PayPal account. Discogs' seller policy says PayPal is required, and buyers pay through it at checkout.
  • Shipping policies for every country or region you will ship to.
  • Seller terms stating how quickly you ship and who pays for return shipping.

You also declare whether you are a hobby seller or a business seller. If your terms don't state a shipping time, a buyer can request cancellation when an order hasn't shipped within four calendar days of payment.

Match the exact release

Discogs tells sellers to make sure "the copy in your hand exactly matches the entry in our database". Search by catalog number or barcode, then confirm the matrix and runout codes, label and country against the release page. Listing a reissue against a first-pressing page misleads buyers, and the seller policy requires every item to match its discography entry.

Grade honestly

Discogs uses the Goldmine standard, graded separately for media and sleeve:

Grade Short meaning
Mint (M) Perfect, unplayed; Discogs says to use it sparingly, if at all
Near Mint (NM or M-) Nearly perfect, no obvious wear
Very Good Plus (VG+) Light signs of play that don't affect playback
Very Good (VG) Surface noise and light scratches you can hear
Good Plus (G+) / Good (G) Plays through with significant noise and wear
Fair (F) / Poor (P) Cracked, badly warped, or skips

A plain or company sleeve can be marked "Generic" instead of graded. Use the item condition comment to note seam splits, writing or stickers. Goldmine advises sellers to grade conservatively; see our grading guide for detail.

Price it from sales history

The listing form shows a suggested price based on the media condition you selected and recent sales of that release in similar condition. On the release page, the low, median and high values come from up to the last 30 sales. Select "Last Sold" for the full history, including the condition of each copy sold.

Compare against copies sold in the same grade, then check what is currently for sale: if ten VG+ copies are listed below your price, yours will wait. You can't raise the price after a buyer orders, or cancel and relist higher.

Fees, checked September 30, 2026

According to Discogs' fee page (last updated July 11, 2026):

  • Listing is free.
  • When an item sells, Discogs charges 9% of the item price plus shipping, with a minimum fee of $0.10 and a maximum of $150 in US dollars. Other currencies have their own limits.
  • PayPal's processing fees are separate and set by PayPal.
  • In some countries, VAT or GST is charged on the Discogs fee itself.

Discogs takes its fee and taxes from the buyer's payment automatically; PayPal labels the total as "Partner Fee". Fees change, so check Discogs' current fee page before you price. Arranging a sale off-platform through Discogs messages can get your account suspended.

Ship it properly

Discogs' packing guide recommends taking the disc out of the jacket so the record can't cause a seam split, putting both in a plastic outer sleeve, and sandwiching them between cardboard in a record mailer. Mark the order "Shipped" within your stated timeframe. For international orders, accurate customs declarations are your responsibility.

Selling on Discogs FAQ

How much does Discogs charge to sell a record?

As of September 30, 2026, Discogs charges 9% of the item price and shipping when an item sells, with a $0.10 minimum and $150 maximum in US dollars. Listing is free, and PayPal's processing fees are separate.

Do I need PayPal to sell on Discogs?

Yes. Discogs' seller policy requires a PayPal account, and payments run through PayPal's checkout, which offers buyers several local payment methods.

How do I know what my record is worth on Discogs?

Find the exact release, then open its sales history from the "Last Sold" date. Compare sales of copies in the same condition as yours rather than relying on the overall median.

Who pays shipping when I sell on Discogs?

The buyer pays the shipping cost set by your shipping policies. You can't add PayPal fees or percentage surcharges to the order, so build handling costs into your shipping rates.

What happens if a buyer says my record was misgraded?

Discogs expects you to resolve it with the buyer on the order page under your stated return terms. It doesn't mediate condition disputes; unresolved cases go to the payment provider.
