MTV2 began broadcasting as "M2" on August 1, 1996 (MTV's 15th anniversary) as a 24-hour music-video channel and in preparation for the upcoming shift to digital cable. In 1999, it was rebranded as MTV2. Around 2004, it shifted away from music to primarily reality-TV programming.
