The son of a bass player who played in the Leon Prima Band, Al Bernard was born in New Orleans, but grew up in Los Angles. At age 19, he returned to New Orleans and began to play in local clubs. Since then, he has played with John Gary, Nancy Wilson, Louie Jordan, Tim Laughlin (2), and many others, in addition to fronting his own groups.
