For the most part, Melbourne singer-songwriter Nick Batterham is softly spoken and close. His four solo albums, written and released in the space of five years, bristle with spiky observations and stark self-realisations. His plaintive vocals, delivered with the world-weariness of Elliott Smith or Nick Drake, express raw emotions with subtlety and beauty. Brooding, sparsely arranged songs take us deep inside late night lives falling apart, yet even when most bleak there is hope and joy.

Batterham is no newcomer to the music scene; for over 25 years he has been a central figure in a number of seminal groups and projects. As singer-songwriter in Blindside he supported acts like Smashing Pumpkins and earned Single of the Week in the UK’s Spin Magazine. With The Earthmen he played a bunch of supports including INXS, Buffalo Tom, Lemonheads and Teenage Fanclub, toured the USA and UK in 1994, and received 5-star reviews and a Best Debut Album ARIA nomination in 1997 for Love Walked In. As well as writing, performing and producing his own music, Nick plays guitar in Cordrazine, also producing their latest album amongst others, and his film sound work has been nominated for both AFI and AACTA awards (2009 and 2012 respectively).
