About

Swedish folk music ensemble.

A dream projec by nine folk musicians. For a long time they had longed for a large folk music ensemble to write music for, and decided to start an orchestra of professional string musicians. Bowing 9 saw the light of day for the first time in a rehearsal space in Bromma, and there was already plenty of music. As soon as it had been decided to have the orchestra as an experimental workshop for compositional ideas, eight of the band's members set about writing for a living. In the beginning, music was recorded for some of the composers' graduation concerts from Kungl. The Academy of Music in Stockholm, and that music, together with some other works, the orchestra also played at, for example, the Korröstämman and at the opening of the concert series at Forsby Kvarn in Uppland.

In 2009, Bowing 9 received another member, as well as composition support from the Cultural Council to write a completely new repertoire of folk music for string orchestra. The music was first performed in November 2009 in St Paul's Church on Mariatorget in Stockholm, as well as at the Concert House in Katrineholm.

The sound is unique in its kind, and the orchestral arrangement invites completely different kinds of sounds than you "normally" hear in a folk music context. The music is difficult to define as a genre, and depending on whose work you are currently playing, the orchestra can sound in many different ways. When the eight composers in Bowing 9 present their creations, it can be anything from danceable melodies to strange rocking epics.
