Defunct professional hockey team playing in the WHA (World Hockey Association) from 1972 to 1979. When the WHA stopped its activity, the team joined the NHL (National Hockey League) and changed their name for the Hartford Whalers. In 1997, the franchise was relocated in North Carolina and became the Carolina Hurricanes.
