Roger Tomlinson was educated at the Duke Of York's Royal Military School, where as a member of the School Band, he played the trombone. In 1957 he joined the Royal Signals Band under the Directorship of the legendary Lt. Col. John L. Judd. As a Student Bandmaster at the Royal Military School of Music he was the winner of the Worshipful Company of Musicians Medal for the best Student Bandmaster of his class in addition to winning many of the Class Competition prizes. His first appointment as a Bandmaster was to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in 1969, and in 1971, he was re-appointed as Bandmaster of the 16th/5th The Queen's Royal Lancers.
