Composer, musicologist, and renowned researcher of Byzantine music. Born in 1946, and died in 30/1/2019 (aged 72)

Christodoulos Halaris grew up in Crete and began studying Byzantine music at an early age. In 1964 he moved to Paris where he studied mathematics, cybernetics and musical automation at the École Pratique des Hautes Etudes. His doctoral thesis at the University of Vincennes was on structural analysis of Byzantine music. In 1969 he returned to Greece and in 1970 became a member of the Parisian “Center for Mathematical Studies of Musical Automatism”. He went on to found the 17-member "Orchestra of Old Traditional and Original Instruments" and presented the work "Secular Byzantine Music".

During the 1980s, he created the record company while allocating considerable funds to deciphering Byzantine music manuscripts. He created the Museum of Ancient and Byzantine Instruments in the city of Thessaloniki, and also reconstructed many musical instruments with representations on ancient vases as his guide. He also wrote the three-volume work "The History of Ancient Greek and Byzantine Music".
