About

British jazz-rock group set up in the early 70s.
The band featured, variously, Roy Babbington (bass), Mike Westbrook (electric piano), Fi Trench (piano, organ), Chris Spedding (guitar), Brian Godding (guitar), Rick Morcombe (guitars), Malcolm Griffiths (trombone), Phil Minton (lead vocals, trumpet), George Khan (sax, flute), Butch Potter (bass) and Alan Jackson (drums). In the early 1970s, Mike Westbrook, a British musician with a solid jazz background, along with some loyal companions, decided to try to combine jazz with a more strictly rock sound, a sonic hybrid that was quite popular at the time. Their music is basically jazz-rock of / ancestry with a bit of Zappa's eccentricity. The band released two albums on RCA Records: Solid Gold Cadillac (1972) and Brain Damage (1973). The demise of the group marked the end of an era in Westbrook's artistic development. He changed direction completely, opting decidedly for less structured, more spontaneous and free music.
