"Spand's playing has stylistic links to the Birmingham pianists; he was living in Detroit in 1929, and was photographed in Chicago in 1940. This is all that's known for certain; rumour has him moving to Los Angeles [...] the suggestion that Spand sings of being 'born in Ellijay' (Georgia) on 'Evil Woman Spell' rests on a mishearing of a reference (authenticating, not autobiographical) to Algiers, Louisiana [...]" (The Penguin guide to blues recordings (2006), p. 602)
